How do you go about looking for an alarm system? Mr Philip Tan, director of Jin Jin Alarm (S) Pte Ltd, which specialized in security for home and commercial properties, offered the following advice.

It is important to chose an established security company which will provide proper after-sales back-up. Be wary of those who simply install the system and offer a vague promise to service if things go wrong. So find out more about the type of service they provide.

One way to check is if the company has it own staff of service technicians (instead of using sub-contractors), so that installation and repairs can be promptly attended to. Look for established companies with a track record or try to get recommendation from home owners who are already enjoying good service and protection from their own systems.

The company must offer a quality product and service. The price you pay is a clue to this as more often than not you get what you pay. Resist the temptation of going for the cheapest. As a rough guide, the cost can range from $2,000 to $3,000 for HDB homes and $4,000 to $7000 for terrace/semidetached homes with a nominal fee (at Jin Jin this is $120 annually) for general maintenance.

A more professional approach is a no-obligation on-site assessment by the expert. Listen to his recommendation for your family and home. While locks and grilles are great for keeping children in, they won't keep thieves out. A burglar alarm system tied to a round-the-clock central monitoring station is the best approach.

The company's central monitoring service has to be backed by Radio Police Division with a Police HQ Hotline for quicker response. When the alarm is triggered, the security company will call to check if it is a false alarm. If not, the police will be informed and a patrol car dispatched.

There are also alarm systems that will send a signal to the home owner's pager to warn him if the alarm is triggered. This on-line service includes a panic button or emergency code capability for immediate action by the security company.

A good time to install a new system is when you are moving into a new home as for reasons of aesthetics and security, wiring can be effectively concealed.

A final word: Never take the security of your home for granted. Think of it as an investment that provides peace of mind with the potential to not only save property, but lives too.
